2:34 PM: Police in San Francisco have arrested a man suspected of shooting a police officer on Saturday afternoon and leading authorities on a high-speed chase through several cities from the East Bay to San Jose, a spokesman said today.
Jeffrey Ruano, 50, a San Francisco resident, allegedly shot a 28-year-old police officer in the shoulder while trying to evade officers in the Mission District at around 2:45 p.m., San Francisco police Officer Gordon Shyy said.
The officer—who has been identified as Mission District Station Officer Adam Shaw—was taken to a hospital where he underwent surgery, Shyy said.
As of Sunday afternoon, Shaw was recovering in stable condition, Shyy said.
Ruano allegedly aimed his car at responding police officers as he sped off from the scene, police said.
Officers shot at the vehicle but the man was not wounded, and his car was found abandoned in Daly City a short time after the incident.
A subsequent investigation led police to the East Bay, where Ruano was identified in a white sedan with two female passengers at about 11 p.m.
The California Highway Patrol attempted to stop Ruano on eastbound Interstate Highway 80 at Carlson Boulevard in Richmond, but the suspect refused to yield, Shyy said.
The suspect then led officers on a chase from Richmond to Danville to San Jose, with speeds reaching up to 100 mph, police said.
Ruano was finally stopped in San Jose, where he and his two passengers were taken into custody at McKee Road and North 33rd Street.
Following questioning by San Francisco police, the two females were released, and Ruano was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon, possession of ammunition, driving in excess of 100 mph, and evading officers.
The case remains under investigation by SFPD.
8:46 AM: Three people were detained this morning after a police chase throughout multiple counties stemming from an officer-involved shooting in San Francisco’s Mission District on Saturday afternoon, a San Francisco police spokesman said.
At about 12:30 a.m. today, officers detained three people at McKee Road and North 33rd Street in San Jose, San Francisco police Officer Gordon Shyy said.

Officers responded to a report of malicious activity in the 1300 block of Florida Street in San Francisco around 2:45 p.m. Saturday, San Francisco police Officer Albie Esparza.
The driver of a suspicious vehicle started to back up as two officers approached, Esparza said.
An officer who approached the driver’s side of the vehicle was hit by gunfire and a second officer shot multiple rounds at the car causing glass to shatter, he said.
The vehicle fled the scene and officers could not tell if the suspect was struck by gunfire, Esparza said.
The injured officer was transported to San Francisco General Hospital and underwent surgery. He was in serious but stable condition as of Saturday evening, according to Esparza.
The officer was identified as a 28-year-old man who has worked for the San Francisco Police Department for six years, Esparza said.
Shortly after the shooting the suspicious vehicle was found unoccupied in Daly City and officers searched the area for the suspects without success, he said.
San Francisco police developed leads and officers located and followed the suspicious vehicle into the East Bay, Shyy said.
The California Highway Patrol was called to assist in the chase around 11 p.m., according to Shyy.
CHP officers arrived and attempted to stop the vehicle on eastbound Interstate Highway 80 and Carlson Boulevard in Richmond, Shyy said.
The vehicle, described as a white sedan, failed to stop and evaded police, according to Shyy.
CHP officers continued to pursue the vehicle through Alameda, Solano and Contra Costa counties, police said.
The chase continued south into Danville and San Jose where three people were detained, according to Shyy.
An investigation is ongoing and police have not released the identities of the three pending interviews and charges to be determined by investigators, Shyy said.
