10:34 PM: A suspect who shot a police officer in San Francisco’s Mission District and fled to Daly City this afternoon remains at large following an extensive multi-agency search, a police spokesman said.
At about 2:45 p.m., police received a report of malicious mischief in the 1300 block of Florida Street, about two blocks east of Garfield Square, according to San Francisco police Officer Albie Esparza.
A description of the suspect and a description of the suspect vehicle were relayed to officers and a traffic stop on the vehicle was initiated, Esparza said.
Two police officers approached the vehicle and the driver began backing up the vehicle as officers approached, Esparza said.
The officer approaching the driver’s side was struck by gunfire, police said.
The second officer approached the passenger’s side of the vehicle and fired several rounds at the suspect vehicle, causing glass to shatter. The driver pulled away and the officers were unable to determine if the suspect was hit by gunfire, according to Esparza.
The injured police officer, identified as a 28-year-old man who has been with the San Francisco Police Department for six years, was transported to San Francisco General Hospital and is undergoing surgery. He is in serious, but stable condition this evening. He is expected to survive, Esparza said.
A short time after the shooting, officers located the suspect vehicle unoccupied in Daly City, according to Esparza.
San Francisco police officers and a number of agencies from the surrounding areas assisted in a search for the suspect, however the suspect was not located during the search, police said.
San Francisco District Attorney George Gascon released a statement in response to this afternoon’s officer-involved shooting.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the SFPD officer and his family. We wish him a full and speedy recovery,” Gascon said. “If anyone has any information that can help with the capture and prosecution of this dangerous individual, please contact the SFPD immediately.”
