Construction has begun on a roadway and underground utility project that will cause traffic delays on a busy San Francisco street for the next year, city officials said today.
Crews are replacing water and sewer mains and making road repairs and other improvements along Franklin Street, a north-south street one block west of Van Ness Avenue that stretches from Market Street to the northern waterfront.
The project will be carried out between Page and Francisco streets, and is not expected to wrap up until November 2014, according to the Department of Public Works.
More than 140 curb ramps are being installed to improve accessibility, and 6,000 tons of asphalt will be poured in a 46-block paving project, according to the department.
Work hours on the project will be 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. Drivers are advised to take alternate routes since lane closures will create delays on the street.
