These Gilded Heart Sugar Cookies are a take on a Valentines Cookie that I made a few years ago. Valentine’s Day conjures up visions of pink and red but I switched things up by using a minty turquoise blue icing as the base for my cookie.

I then piped on a white scroll design and painted over it with some shiny gold luster dust. The result is this gilded opulent looking design that is both romantic and unusual all at the same time. Each of these cookies is around 4″ in size and approximately 1/4″ thick.

Tips on how to make your own:
Use your favorite sugar cookie recipe (or you can try my favorite here) and add a little Creme Bouquet Flavoring or Princess Cake Flavoring to create a real bakery cookie flavor.

This type of flavoring imparts a citrus/vanilla taste that is perfect for sugar cookies. You can even add it to your icing to extend the flavor. Make sure to chill your cut out dough before baking to help preserve the shape.

To decorate your cookies you will need royal icing. (This is my go-to recipe that I use every time I make sugar cookies.) Set aside some thick white icing to use later for detail work before tinting the rest of the icing to use as the base.

I used a little bright turquoise food coloring and a drop of green food coloring to create the base icing of my cookies but you can use whatever color you like! Make sure the icing is thick enough to stay on the cookie but fluid enough to spread out and create a smooth surface.

After piping the base icing on the cookies, quickly pick up the just iced cookie and shake it back and forth to help smooth the surface. Let the base icing dry and then pipe on your desired design. I did a series of dots and scrolls and swirls. When the icing is dried, paint on a combination of lemon extract mixed with gold luster dust to create a rich glowing gilded look to the cookies.

There is a huge array of luster dust colors and food coloring to choose from. Let your imagination guide you and create a beautiful, edible creation of your own!
