Oh, jeez, I hate to be that guy — and by that guy, I mean the guy who comments “that’s not the Haight, that’s the Panhandle, you idiots would know that if you had lived in San Francisco as long as I have” one some news story about a shooting or something. But I am about to be that guy, or, more precisely, about to quote him or her.

Chron reporter John Wildermuth begins his nice article on community papers like the The Sunset Beacon and the The Potrero View with this paragraph (corrected at around 9:30 today, here’s how it appeared in print and online until then):

PG&E is brightening the street lights along Persia Avenue in the Excelsior. Richmond District residents are upset that Muni buses are now running along 15th Street. The reopened Potrero Hill public library is boosting business on 20th Street.

Later he says that these neighborhood papers “can cover neighborhood issues in a way larger, more regionally oriented papers like The Chronicle could never do.”

One has to wonder if street maps fall under the heading of “neighborhood issues,” as, as Gate commenter JazzHelps notes:

Update: Commenter Tom notes that the story was corrected on SFGate shortly after we published this story at 9 AM. Which is what one should do when one makes a mistake, so good for them.

To clarify, for those of you like my respected colleague who just IMed asking “What’s the goof, exactly? I don’t live in the area.” (Number) Streets like 24th Street, 16th Street, etc, are in the south part of the city (Mission, Noe, etc.) (Number) Avenues like 9th Avenue, 19th Avenue are what we have on the west side (Richmond, Sunset, etc).
