San Francisco and Fremont-bound BART trains were briefly delayed this morning because of a mechanical problem on a train at the 12th Street Oakland City Center station, agency officials said.

The problem was reported shortly before 8:45 a.m. when passengers reported smelling and seeing smoke on the San Francisco International Airport-bound train.

The passengers left the train and crews determined that an inverter on one of the train cars had malfunctioned, BART spokeswoman Luna Salaver said.

The train was taken out of service and the passengers continued on via a train from another platform, a BART dispatcher said.

The problem was initially causing delays of about 15 minutes for trains traveling to Fremont and San Francisco, but service was returning to normal as of about 9:10 a.m., Salaver said.
