Residents of San Francisco’s Richmond District turned out in droves today to celebrate the reopening of the newly renovated Cabrillo Playground.

The playground at 38th Avenue between Fulton and Cabrillo streets has undergone a $4.5 million renovation that included new pirate-themed children’s play areas, picnic areas, basketball and tennis courts, a permanent ping pong table and a renovation to the historic 1938 clubhouse building, according to San Francisco Recreation and Park officials.

The project was financed by the 2008 Clean and Safe Neighborhood Parks Bond, with additional funds raised by The Friends of Cabrillo Playground.

Donors who contributed toward the project were recognized with mosaic tiles along one of the park’s seat walls.
