A man was convicted of second-degree murder today for a 2011 fatal shooting in San Francisco’s Potrero Hill neighborhood that resulted from a dispute over a cellphone, prosecutors said.
Antoine Grays, 32, was found guilty of the murder charge and a gun enhancement by a San Francisco Superior Court jury that spent nearly four days deliberating the case, according to the district attorney’s office.
Grays was allegedly squatting illegally in the Potrero Hill public housing complex in the 900 block of Connecticut Street where the victim, 33-year-old Sylvestri Brown, lived, prosecutors said.
On Jan. 30, 2011, Grays and Brown began arguing over Grays’ repeated attempts to borrow Brown’s cellphone.
The argument escalated and Grays shot Brown in the back. He was arrested shortly afterward, prosecutors said.
Grays faces 40 years to life in prison when he is sentenced on May 16.
“All residents of San Francisco deserve a safe and violence-free neighborhood,” District Attorney George Gascon said in a statement. “Thanks to witnesses who came forward, this violent individual is off the streets and facing life in prison.”
