The Spinster Trailer from Kristin Tieche on Vimeo.

If the hilly terrain of SF has ever been a deterrent to getting on a bike and riding around the city, filmmaker Kristin Tieche may have a fun way to motivate you thanks to her new short film “The Spinster.”

“I’m trying to inspire [people] to cycle more,” Tieche tells the Appeal.

“It’s part of what I do and the overall message. I want to show people who are having these great lives this story where the main characters just happen to be riding bikes and incorporating that into this enjoyable, entertaining story.”

The Spinster follows an unmarried cyclist who has simply had enough of the dating world, though her marital status is almost tertiary to the actual subject matter of the short film. As the main character Phoebe is a strong protagonist, the horror aspects soon transforms her into quite the opposite. The over-the-top special effects and lighting pivotal to the genre was one of Tieche’s main inspirations.

“I initially thought of it as a performance piece where I’d be biking around carrying a decapitated head and people would think, ‘what the hell is that?’ I decided to take that and turn it into a movie,” says Tieche.

“Around that time a friend and I were discussing the woes of filmmaking: how it’s so costly and time-consuming. We decided that we should each make short films — something fun — and finish it in one year.”

What followed was a screenplay that was completed in June and finally the film itself, which was completed in December of last year. Once Tieche had chosen LA actress Gabriela Sosa to play the lead, the pieces fell together. Community involvement has been pivotal in both the filmmaking and promoting process.

“Our number one reward of the Kickstarter has been the Maneater shirt from Nooworks that Phoebe wears in the film, even on guys. That really is our hot ticket item,” says Tieche.

Nooworks will be hosting the Kickstarter Wrap Party this evening starting at 7pm. Exclusive clips from the film will be premiered at tonight’s wrap party, along with food from MamakSF, music from DJ Precious Cargo, and drinks from Lagunitas Brewing Company, Cerruti Cellars, and Numi Tea. Just about every fancy is set to be tickled. There’s even a silent auction with items donated from Nooworks, Po Campo, Hotel Carlton, and more. Portions of all proceeds will go directly to The Spinster’s Kickstarter. Though The Spinster’s Kickstarter is fully funded, Tieche is looking for one last push before its Sunday end. She hopes to raise $10,000 total to assist with the cost of DVD production.
