Anyone traveling through San Francisco International Airport this weekend could face delays as a major runway will be temporarily closed for safety upgrades, an airport spokesman said.
The closure, which goes into effect on Friday night at 10 p.m. and lasts until Monday at 8 a.m., could reduce flight traffic from 60 aircraft per hour to 30, SFO spokesman Doug Yakel said.
“It is one of two runways that is primarily used for arriving aircraft,” Yakel said.
The temporary shutdown will allow crews to perform federally mandated upgrades, such as constructing new threshold areas, and installing new lighting systems and navigational aids, he said.
Regional flights, or flights originating within two hours of SFO, could experience delays at peak travel times on Saturday and Sunday between 9 a.m. and noon, and 6 p.m. and 9 p.m., Yakel said.
Passengers are advised to check with their respective airlines before heading to the airport.
The construction work is part of a Runway Safety Area project that is expected to be completed in the fall of 2015.
