America’s Cup race officials announced today plans for a temporary 9,000-seat venue at the site of the race’s headquarters on San Francisco’s waterfront.
The America’s Cup Pavilion, a partnership between race officials and the entertainment company Live Nation, will be located at the America’s Cup Park at Piers 27-29 and will host concerts and other shows as well as race activities and viewing sessions.
Construction is set to begin this spring with the first events scheduled for mid-May 2013, according to race officials.
The first headliner announced at the venue is the musician Sting, who will play there on June 2 as part of a concert series that will run through October. Tickets go on sale a month from today on Feb. 22 at 10 a.m. on www.ticketmaster.com.
America’s Cup CEO Stephen Barclay said in a statement that the pavilion will “create a fun atmosphere with both entertainment and educational opportunities” and will “celebrate music and culture as part of the America’s Cup.
Live Nation Northern California vice president Aaron Siuda said there is currently only an agreement for a one-year facility partnership between Live Nation and the America’s Cup and that “there are no plans at this point” for the facility past this year.
Jane Eagleson with the America’s Cup Event Authority said the plans for the venue were already included in the environmental impact report previously submitted to the city, so there will be no need for additional permitting hearings on the pavilion.
Piers 27-29 are also designed as the center of activities during the America’s Cup races, which include the Louis Vuitton Cup between July 4 and Aug. 30, the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup from Sept. 1-4 and then the America’s Cup Finals from Sept. 7-21.
The area will include team bases, interactive exhibits, food courts and merchandise shops.
