police-light-bar1.jpgA motorcyclist was killed in a crash in Merced Heights on Tuesday evening, police said today.

The crash was reported at 6:09 p.m. at Garfield and Byxbee streets.

The motorcyclist, a man identified by SF Weekly as 37-year-old Frederick Legaspi, was riding east on Garfield Street when a red Pontiac that had been at a stop sign on northbound Byxbee Street entered the intersection, police spokesman Officer Gordon Shyy said.

The vehicles collided, and the motorcyclist fell off his bike and onto the street. He was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The driver of the Pontiac, a 28-year-old San Francisco woman, was not injured in the crash, Shyy said.

Shyy said the crash remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call the Police Department’s anonymous tip line at (415) 575-4444 or send a tip by text message to TIP411.
