The two-alarm fire was reported at 9:50 a.m. at a three-story, 12-unit building at 65 Cleary Court, off of Laguna Street.

Fire department spokeswoman Mindy Talmadge said the fire started in an apartment on the second floor and spread to a third-story unit.

The person who died was in the apartment on the second floor, she said.

Two men suffered from smoke inhalation but declined to be taken to a hospital, and one firefighter suffered a minor laceration, she said.

One of the victims, Bill Sargis, 72, said he was sleeping in his third-floor apartment when the fire started and was awakened by firefighters banging on his door.

He said that once he exited his bedroom he “couldn’t see anything there was smoke everywhere.”

Two firefighters helped him downstairs and outside, where he was checked out in an ambulance. He declined to be taken to a hospital.

Hubert Gronen, 60, of Germany, who is visiting San Francisco, said he is staying with a friend across the street from where the fire burned and was awakened by the sirens this morning. He looked outside and saw fire.

“I saw a solid wall of flames on the left side of the building,” Gronen said.

Firefighters spoke with 12 residents outside the building after the fire, but it is unclear how many people have been displaced, Talmadge said.

She said two apartments on the second and third floors sustained fire damage, and the first-floor apartment below them had water damage.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
