San Francisco officials are celebrating the reopening of the Rosa Parks Senior Center today in the city’s Western Addition neighborhood.
The center, located on the campus of the Rosa Parks Housing Development, a 200-unit public housing high-rise at 1251 Turk St., has been closed for about 10 months for renovations.
The renovations, funded by a federal stimulus grant, addressed a lack of central heating and accessibility at the center, as well as the need to replace outdated fixtures, according to the San Francisco Housing Authority, which applied for the grant.
The senior center, built in 1960, has primarily been a place where residents could go to engage in recreation and seek support services, according to the housing authority.
“The new center will be used not only to serve our clients but for the greater community and we look forward to seeing everyone return,” San Francisco Housing Authority Executive Director Henry Alvarez said in a statement.
The reopening of the center will be celebrated with an 11:30 a.m. ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by Mayor Ed Lee and Supervisor Christina Olague along with other city officials.
