A man pleaded not guilty Friday to robbing and killing another man in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park last week, a district attorney’s office spokeswoman said.
Marcus Herrera, 23, is accused of killing 55-year-old Robert Musial, who was found by officers near Sharon Art Studio around 7:20 p.m. on April 27.
Herrera made his initial appearance Friday court this morning to enter his plea. A San Francisco Superior Court judge ordered him held on $5 million bail, district attorney’s office spokeswoman Stephanie Ong Stillman said.
When Musial was initially found by the officers he was experiencing some sort of medical emergency and lost consciousness before an ambulance arrived. Emergency crews tried to revive him, but he was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
Witnesses reported Musial had been involved in an altercation prior to being found by police, and an autopsy by the medical examiner’s office preliminarily found he had blunt-force injuries, causing the case to be ruled a homicide, police said.
Herrera was identified as a suspect and was brought to the San Francisco Hall of Justice for questioning Sunday. He was subsequently arrested on suspicion of homicide, robbery and assault with a deadly weapon, according to police.
Herrera will return to court May 18 for a status hearing in the case, Stillman said.
