rental-agreement.jpgMacy’s, the nation’s largest department store chain, has entered into a lease to run its website operations out of an office in San Francisco’s South of Market neighborhood, Mayor Ed Lee announced today.

The company signed a 15-year lease for office space on the top seven floors of 680 Folsom St., where employees running the e-commerce operations of macys.com will work starting in January 2014, according to the mayor’s office.

“With Macy’s long history in San Francisco, it is fitting that their entire technology division is located right here in the heart of SoMa, taking advantage of the incredible talent in our city,” Lee said in a statement.

The announcement comes after Riverbed Technology, a network hardware company, announced last month that it had signed a lease in the same building at 680 Folsom St., which is now 80 percent leased.

Today’s announcement means the city has had more than 1 million square feet of office space leased by tech firms already this year, according to the mayor’s office.

“I am thrilled that we have reached this milestone,” Lee said. “We are moving forward and relentlessly focusing on job creation here in the city.”
