gavel.jpgA man who was fatally stabbed at a homeless shelter in San Francisco’s South of Market neighborhood has been identified by the medical examiner’s office as 44-year-old Abdul Smith.

Smith, a San Francisco resident, was stabbed at the St. Vincent de Paul Society’s homeless shelter at 525 Fifth St., near Bryant Street, shortly before 7 p.m. Monday.
He was taken to a hospital, where he died a short time later.

The stabber fled but was found by police about 10 minutes later a block away, at Fourth and Bryant streets. Witnesses identified the suspect, Ricky Leon Scott, 63, as the stabber, police said.

Scott was charged with murder and made his initial appearance in San Francisco Superior Court today. He did not enter a plea and was ordered held without bail by Judge Gerardo Sandoval.

Scott will return to court on Tuesday to enter a plea and for a bail hearing.
