What: Rainbow Grocery 20% Off Day
When: Tuesday, June 8, 9 AM-9 PM
Where:
Rainbow Grocery, 1745 Folsom at 13th Street

Appeal contrib Laura Beck reminds us at both vegansaurus and SFoodie that today’s “Customer Appreciation Discount Day” at Rainbow Grocery means “20% OFF EVERYTHING!” in the entire 36-year-old co-op.

The store used to place 20% coupons in the yellow pages, to be used once a month, on a specific day at the store.

They discontinued that practice last fall after concerns that “the store was so crowded on coupon days that it was at risk of losing old, loyal customers and overwhelming those worker/owners who did not thrive on the nonstop adrenaline of working a crowded store,” Mission Local reported in September, 2010.

Will today’s discount day be as or more packed than those monthly discount days used to be? As poor as I am (and I am very, very poor), I’m probably not going to make the trek to check it out.

If you go, though, let us know how it was!

It was insane – carts everywhere, blocking everything, people standing in the middle of aisles like so many frozen deer – but people remained calm. I am pretty sure I waited well over an hour to check out. During the wait, Rainbow workers came by periodically to offer ginger candy, grapes, and those little Italian square wafer cookies. At some point a worker came on the PA and said, “Attention Rainbow shoppers: Thank you so much for your patience today. You are doing great. You look great.” That made me smile.

Was it worth $29? Well, it’s like I got a Silpat baking sheet and an iron skillet free, so yes, it was worth it.

It was CRAZY!!!!! Even busier than the coupon days. At 4:30 it was an hour wait. Chatted up the people in line which helped pass the time. Also, we took turns watching each others carts and grabbing items we forgot. (don’t forget the Dr. Bronners) People grinned and bared it overall.

I remembered to bring containers. Stocked up on staples, olive oil, oatmeal, rice, beans, peanut butter, flour, maple syrup, honey. But even though I braced for it I don’t know if I’ll be back. Better to go to my super secret hideaway…..San Francisco Herb Co. around the corner on 14th St.
