Sheriff Michael Hennessey announced today that he is endorsing Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi as his successor in November’s election.
Hennessey announced in February that he would not seek reelection after more than three decades as San Francisco’s sheriff.
Mirkarimi announced his intent to run days later and is one of seven candidates that have joined the race. Other people seeking the seat include David Wong, president of the San Francisco Deputy Sheriffs’ Foundation, and Matt Haskell, a 13-year veteran of the department.
On the steps outside City Hall today, Hennessey endorsed Mirkarimi to take his place.
Supervisor David Campos was also present at the announcement.
Mirkarimi said afterward that Hennessey’s was “the most important endorsement of the race.”
He said Hennessey’s support is crucial “in any elected race … since he’s just about the longest-tenured city employee.”
If Mirkarimi is elected sheriff in November, the mayor will appoint his replacement as supervisor for the rest of his term, which ends in January 2013.
