bagels.JPGThanks to my New York-born, Jewish father, I am a self-proclaimed bagel connoisseur (just check out my somewhat failed attempt at baking them, on my food blog).

But sadly, while I am confident in my ability to identify the perfectly chewy, doughy bagel, I quickly learned that I can’t quite successfully bake my own. Lucky for me and other bagel lovers out there, Danny Gabriner of Sour Flour is giving away hundreds of free bagels every Monday at La Victoria Bakery at 24th and Alabama. The bagels start flowin’ at 8am and usually last until around 3pm, when his stash is cleared out.

Longtime readers of the Appeal might remember an interview we did with Gabriner in 2009, back when his Bagel Mondays had him delivering bagels all over the city, and the bread he made was given away.

Since then, his Sour Flour baking business has continued to grow, now selling goods to local stores and educating the community about the art and science of bread baking. One thing hasn’t changed, however: he still wants to give everyone the opportunity to try a fresh, homemade bagel.

You can email danny@sourflour.org every Sunday by noon to put in your bagel order, or just show up and snag one on your way to work. You can also sign up for training to learn how to make your very own homemade bagels.
