Jeffrey Halperin, 30, who lived in San Francisco’s Pacific Heights neighborhood, died Sunday at Northstar-at-Tahoe resort near Truckee, sheriff’s Sgt. Paul Schmidt said.

Halperin was snowboarding with a friend when they got separated, and when the friend got to the bottom of the run and waited, Halperin never showed up, Schmidt said.

Someone else found Halperin in a tree well. Investigators “are not sure whether he crashed into the tree or simply went down at the tree,” Schmidt said.

It could take up to two months to determine whether the cause of death was blunt force trauma or suffocation, he said.
