A San Quentin State Prison death row inmate died today of natural causes at a hospital outside the prison, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said this afternoon.

Richard Ray Parson, 67, was received on death row from Sacramento County on Oct. 22, 1996, according to the CDCR.

He was convicted of killing 60-year-old Theresa Schmiedt at a Sacramento apartment complex on Jan. 2, 1994, CDCR spokeswoman Peggy Bengs said.

Parson was sentenced to death in Sacramento County Superior Court on Oct. 11, 1996, according to the CDCR.

Since 1978, when California reinstated capital punishment, 53 condemned inmates have died of natural causes, 18 committed suicide, 13 were executed in California, one was executed in Missouri and six died from other causes, according to the CDCR.

As of Dec. 21, there were 713 inmates on death row.
