A box of flares were found and detonated this afternoon near Fort Funston, a part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area near Lake Merced, according to police and park officials.
The flares, which had U.S. Navy markings on them, had floated up in the water near Fort Funston today, Golden Gate National Recreation Area spokeswoman Alexandra Picavet said.
San Francisco police bomb specialists were called in to manage the flares, police Officer Albie Esparza said.
The flares were detonated on the beach. No injuries were reported, according to park officials.
