Seven miles an hour? As part of my triathlon training, I recently ran from my apartment at 9th and Howard to Ocean Beach, about 6.5 miles, in an hour and five minutes — easily ten minutes faster than I’ve ever gotten there on Muni.

MUNI’s decline has been going on for the better part of two decades.

    Scratch that, three decades.

The last _good_ year on MUNI was 1967. That’s coming up on half a century soon folks.

And yes, I have been riding for longer than that.

7 miles an hour that’s right. Take a 30 down Stockton or sit in the tunnel with five trains backed up at West Portal station and you’ll know just why. Apparently, they can’t even seem to be able to kick car traffic off of Ulloa to get trains to leave West Poral quickly.
So here we are, 30 years of deferred investments and $15billion behind. DT is right 1967 or so was prolly the last good year. No tunnels into the Richmond, down Taraval, Judah out to UCSF to name just a few. Go visit a developed country and a place the size of San Francisco / Bay Area and you’ll be astounded about the level of infrastructure they have to move people around.

If I worked for Muni I would have the night maintenance people switch on the GPS Nextbus boxes and drive a bunch of buses up and down empty streets a few times every night to push the average speed up. Maybe even take them up and down the freeway a few times at 70 mph.

    Karl is right.

I have repeated suggested that local transit agencies hire people from Japan/South Korea/Switzerland. Those guys get it. Whomever MUNI/Caltrain/BART/VTA/SamTrans/etc. hires simply doesn’t get it.
