Black Swan – Metreon, Kabuki
Darren Aronofsky’s dark surreal film about the bloodiness of ballet. Vincent Cassel (a real ballerina!) with the chickeny collared-boned Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis. I was asked if there were any good reviews, or if I thought it would be good, and I paused for a long time and replied with an “Um.” Which I think will probably sum up the movie. Related note – rent The Company.
Sound of Music Sing-A-Long – Castro
You may think you don’t know the words, but then you hear a song and realize you know every line of this amazing movie – imagine sharing this enlightened childlike feeling with about a hundred others, tipsy.
White Material – Bridge
Claire Denis’ directs Isabelle Huppert, who tries to save her coffee plantation in Africa, and has an ex-husband (Christopher Lambert aka The Highlander) who tries to sabotage. Some are comparing it to Nicholas Roeg’s Walkabout and Herzog’s Agguire: The Wrath of God, two very fine pictures.
Marwencol – Lumiere
A documentary about art as post traumatic stress therapy after a brutal attack. The art becomes a world of its own, with doll doppelgangers. Then, it becomes big news in a art magazine, and the man’s safe world shatters.
