An inmate in the San Quentin State Prison apparently committed suicide Saturday morning, according to police.
George Hatton Smithey, 70, was found hanging alone in his cell early Saturday morning. His death is being investigated as a suicide, police said.
Smithey was put on California’s death row on July 19, 1989 for the murder and attempted rape of Cheryl Anne Nesler on April 18, 1988, police said.
