A man accused in the 2008 shooting death of a San Francisco man in the city’s Mission District was ordered to stand trial for murder today.
Steve Lane, 19, is accused of killing 21-year-old Jose Reynoso on Feb. 8, 2008.
Prosecutors said Reynoso was sitting with a group drinking on the sidewalk near South Van Ness Avenue and 25th Street that night when Lane and another man approached them and started an altercation.
At the conclusion of a two-day preliminary hearing today, Judge Jerome Benson ruled that prosecutors had presented sufficient evidence to show that Lane and his companion had provoked the fight with their “hard stares” at Reynoso’s group.
Prosecutors allege that Lane shot Reynoso with a pistol once in the head and twice in the chest. Reynoso died hours later.
Benson ordered Lane to stand trial on one count of murder with a special allegation of the use of a firearm in the killing.
Lane is being held on $5 million bail and is scheduled to be arraigned in San Francisco Superior Court on Aug. 31.
