pge_gasleak.jpg5/10 1:58 AM: A shelter-in-place in San Francisco’s South of Market District was lifted this morning after a gas leak prompted police to evacuate several buildings Sunday night, a police spokesman said.

The shelter-in-place was lifted just after 1:30 a.m., Officer Boaz Mariles said. The intersection of Eighth and Townsend streets, where the crash occurred at about 9:30 p.m., was still closed.

PG&E spokeswoman Brandi Ehlers said a vehicle hit a meter and broke a gas pipe that comes out the ground, causing a leak.

The leak prompted a shelter-in-place warning, which was issued at 9:58 p.m. between Seventh and Ninth streets for the area between Townsend and Brannan streets, according a fire dispatcher.

One person suffered minor injuries in the crash, the dispatcher said.

5/9 10:44 PM: A gas leak caused by a crash in San Francisco’s South of Market District tonight has caused a shelter-in-place warning to be issued in surrounding areas, a fire dispatcher said.

The crash was reported at 9:38 p.m. near the intersection of Eighth and Townsend streets, according to the dispatcher.

A vehicle hit a meter and broke a gas pipe that comes out the ground, causing a leak of the gas, PG&E spokeswoman Brandi Ehlers said.

Utility crews were en route to the scene as of 10:35 p.m. to shut off the gas, Ehlers said.

The leak prompted a shelter-in-place warning, which was issued at 9:58 p.m. between Seventh and Ninth streets for the area between Townsend and Brannan streets, according to the fire dispatcher.

There was no estimate for when the warning would be lifted.

One person suffered minor injuries in the crash, the dispatcher said.
