San Francisco police are investigating two similar car fires that occurred on 39th Avenue on Sunday.

The first fire happened sometime between midnight Saturday and noon Sunday in the 2200 block of 39th Avenue in the city’s Sunset District, police spokesman Officer Samson Chan said.

The victim told police she had parked her car on the street on Saturday night, and that when she returned to the car at noon on Sunday, she found that the interior had been lit on fire.

The fire was out by the time she discovered it, Chan said.

The second fire occurred at about midnight Sunday in the 700 block of 39th Avenue in the city’s Richmond District.

“The victim came out and noticed that there was smoke coming out of her car,” Chan said.
He said that after the fire was out, the victim discovered items were missing from the car.
It is not yet clear whether the same person started both fires, Chan said.

“These two car fires are being investigated as different incidents, but the fire inspector is comparing notes to see if they may be related to each other and if they may be related to prior car arsons,” he said.
