The first shipment of parts for the Bay Bridge’s suspension span are arriving in Oakland this afternoon, a Caltrans spokesman said.

The deck sections were shipped from Shanghai, China, and were expected to arrive at the Port of Oakland at about 2 p.m., Caltrans spokesman Bart Ney said.

The shipment, which includes eight deck sections and cross beams that will connect the span’s eastbound and westbound decks, weighs nearly 6,800 tons.

The steel segments were originally supposed to arrive in the Bay Area in July 2009 before problems at the work site in China caused a delay of several months.

Transportation officials still hope the new eastern span can be completed on time and on budget in 2013.

Ney said that once the steel arrives at the port, it will undergo a couple of weeks of processing and inspection. Crews will be able to start moving parts into place in about mid-February, he said.
