San Francisco Public Utilities Commission crews responded to a water main break in Noe Valley this afternoon, a utility spokesman said.

A 12-inch water main began leaking water into the roadway in the area of 24th and Douglass streets at about 3:20 p.m., SFPUC spokesman Tony Winnicker said. The main was shut off and by 3:50 p.m. most of the water had drained out of the street.

Winnicker said water service was not affected but that the rupture caused some street buckling. Crews were continuing repairs this afternoon and Winnicker said a street closure may be necessary. Traffic was not expected to be seriously impacted.

The cause of the rupture is under investigation.
