A man was critically injured early this morning in a stabbing in downtown San Francisco, police said.

Officers responded to a reported stabbing in the area of Maiden Lane and Kearny Street at around 1:35 a.m., about a block away from Union Square, according to the San Francisco Police Department.

The victim had been stabbed in the chest, police said, and was taken to San Francisco General Hospital in critical condition.
