BART.pngAfter a vote on Thursday from its governing body, BART will hire an outside agency search for its next chief of police. In the wake of a damning independent report on the BART Police police shooting of Oscar Grant III, current chief Gary Gee announced last month that he’ll be stepping down at the end of the year.

Gee is also named as a defendant in a lawsuit from Grant’s father.

Heavy community scrutiny is expected of the selection process. While many are waiting to see systemic change in BART Police practices, a law to implement independent oversight of the department is currently stalled in the state legislature.
