A rally will be held in front of Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office on Friday to encourage her to support the federal Gulf Coast Civil Works Act, which will create 100,000 jobs and help rebuild the Gulf Coast if passed.

The event is being organized by multiple Bay Area organizations, including the NAACP Silicon Valley/ San Jose and South Bay AFL-CIO Labor Council, and will roughly coincide with the fourth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina this weekend.

The program will include reflections from hurricane survivors; a reading of the names of the 1,836 people who died in Katrina and the planting a white flag for each victim; the delivery a letter to Pelosi encouraging her to sign on as a co-sponsor of the bill; and the delivery of more than 10,000 signed petitions in support of the bill.

The Gulf Coast act would create 100,000 jobs and training opportunities for workers to rebuild the area and restore the coastal environment with green building techniques, according to event organizers.

The rally will be held at noon in front of the Phillip Burton Federal Building at 450 Golden Gate Avenue, on the plaza in front of the flagpoles.
