More than three dozen San Francisco arts organizations have been granted up to $50,000 in stimulus funds through the National Endowment for the Arts American Recovery and Reinvestment Act Grant Program, the city’s arts commission announced this week.

The 37 grantees included several museums, such as the Asian Art Museum Foundation of San Francisco and the Contemporary Jewish Museum, eight theaters including the American Conservatory Theatre Foundation, and 26 other arts organizations.

“In these challenging economic times the arts are more vital than ever,” Luis Cancel, director of cultural affairs for San Francisco Arts Commission, said in a statement.

The grants were awarded in amounts of $25,000 and $50,000.
