John Madden retired yesterday, sending shockwaves through both the sports community, which lost one of its heroes, and the non-sports community, which lost its only identifiable connection to sports. Even the English language felt the blow, as the fates of assorted exclamations “Boom,” “Wham,” and “Boink,” remain uncertain. The Sharks and Giants felt the sting of loss too, but Friday, April 17th, 2009 belongs to Madden and the legions of columnists who labor now to understand the man, his legacy, and ultimately his future.
