Authorities have identified an elderly woman who was critically injured when she was struck by an alleged drunken driver on a San Francisco thoroughfare earlier this month, a hospital spokeswoman said today.
The woman, who was struck at about 11:30 p.m. June 8 while crossing Van Ness Avenue at Vallejo Street, was taken in critical condition to San Francisco General Hospital.
Hospital officials tried various means to determine the woman’s name, including reaching out to the media last week for help identifying her. She was described as an Asian woman in her 70s or 80s.
The woman’s family was eventually reached and they were able to identify her at her bedside Friday, hospital spokeswoman Rachael Kagan said.
The family has chosen not to release the woman’s name, Kagan said.
Douglas Perine, 41, is accused of misdemeanor DUI charges in connection with the collision. He was arraigned last Wednesday and pleaded not guilty, and will return to court on July 24, prosecutors said.
The woman was allegedly crossing against the light on Van Ness Avenue when she was struck by Perine, according to police.
