Home Depot is again looking to build a new store in SF, this time in the Bayview District. As the SF Business Times reports, Home Depot filed an application to build a store on industrial land at 1901 Cesar Chavez St.
According to the Biz Times, the 50,000 square foot property is currently being used by Webcor as a staging space for its construction of the SF General Hospital. Before that, it was the location of the San Francisco Chronicle’s “city plant” printing presses. The paper outsourced its printing business to a Canadian company in 2009.
As Socketsite notes, this isn’t the first time Home Depot has tried to move into the city: just four years ago Home Depot lost its potential spot on Bayshore Boulevard after the recession and a proposed expensive design made the move too costly.
Lowe’s eventually moved into that location with a107,000 square foot store, and reportedly brought hundreds of jobs to the area.
Home Depot also tried to move into Visitacion Valley, at the former Schlage Lock land back in 2000, but backed out after zoning controls proposed by then-Supervisor Tim Ammiano.
Will the third time be the charm? Home Depot spokeswoman Kathryn Gallagher sounds pretty determined, when she tells the Biz Times that “San Francisco is an important market for the Home Depot. We have wanted to open a store in the city for decades and feel we have found the perfect location for a store.”
