Joseph Johnson has been charged with the killing of Dwayne Spruell, 45, district attorney’s spokesman Seth Steward said.

Spruell, a San Francisco resident, was shot at about 2:15 a.m. on Sept. 5 in the first block of Camp Street, near Guerrero Street, police said.

Officers responding to a report of shots fired found him lying on the ground suffering from a gunshot wound to the head and another to the chest. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The homicide was the third in the Mission District in less than a week, and prompted the Police Department to step up patrols in the neighborhood to try to quell the violence.

Johnson is set to be arraigned at 1:30 p.m. at the San Francisco Hall of Justice.
