San Francisco police say four police officers accompanied representatives from Apple Inc. to contact a Bernal Heights resident regarding a lost item, which has widely been reported to be an iPhone prototype.
Officers from the Ingleside district accompanied the Apple employees to a home on the 500 block of Anderson Street after Apple contacted police for help, Lt. Troy Dangerfield said.
The Apple employees then contacted the resident at the home and went inside to search for the lost item, Dangerfield said. When they did not find the item, they left the house.
San Francisco police issued a statement on the search after a report from SF Weekly indicated that the man whose home was searched had been led to believe he was dealing with the police. Police initially said there was no record of the incident, but then determined that some officers had in fact assisted in the search.
The statement from police did not indicate when the search occurred. Dangerfield said he did not know if the police and Apple employees had clearly identified themselves but had no information indicating they did not.
Dangerfield declined to answer any further questions on the incident.
Calls to Apple seeking comment were not returned.
