The recent census has given SFians all sorts of fun information lately, such as the fact that we’re all really old. Following that data from the other end of the spectrum, the Wall Street Journal has reported that San Francisco has the smallest percentage of households with children in California.
California’s average percentage of families with kids is about 37.6%, with poverty-stricken Imperial County in SoCal leading at 50.6%. Dropping about 20 points from average lies SF at the bottom with 17.7%.
The Lucile Packard Foundation for Children’s Health, which culled this information, speculates that high housing costs may be the reason fewer children are in our homes than in others in CA. Or maybe the reactions of some San Franciscans when confronted by children in public drive parents to kid-friendlier climes.
