cover-crosswalk.jpgA 72-year-old woman was fatally struck by a truck this morning in San Francisco’s South of Market neighborhood, authorities said.

Police received multiple calls at about 8:48 a.m. reporting that a truck had struck a woman as she was crossing Second Street at Townsend Street in a crosswalk, San Francisco police Officer Albie Esparza said.

The mobile crane tractor truck had been traveling east on Townsend Street and was making a left-hand turn onto northbound Second Street when the vehicle struck the woman, Esparza said.

The San Francisco Fire Department’s headquarters are located right near the intersection, and firefighters were at the scene almost immediately, fire spokeswoman Lt. Mindy Talmadge said.

The woman was transported to San Francisco General Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries at 1:50 p.m., Esparza said.

Her name is not being released until her family is notified of the death, according to the San Francisco medical examiner’s office.

The man driving the truck remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities. There is no evidence that drugs or alcohol played a role in the accident, Esparza said.

The driver was “extremely distraught” by what happened, Talmadge said.

The company that owns the truck is Sheedy Drayage, which offers a variety of crane and rigging services, she said.

Esparza said the Police Department is continuing to investigate the crash.

The fatal pedestrian crash is San Francisco’s second this week.

Aurora Venida, 87, was struck by a car at Geary and Arguello boulevards on Monday. She was taken to a hospital where she died on Wednesday, according to the medical examiner’s office.
