10:08 AM: Reports of a suspicious package have sent a slew of SFPD officers to Market Street, an SFPD spokesperson confirmed this morning.
Appeal contrib Katie Doze first noted that the whole block of Market near Fremont “in front of the Bank of America and Specialties and that statue is closed off with yellow police tape” and that a ” gigantic bomb squad” truck was on the scene.
SFPD spokesperson Sergeant Troy Dangerfield confirmed that a “suspicious package” had been reported in the area, but he did not have any additional details at this time.
As of 10:13 AM, Market is closed “All the way to Battery, says Doze. “Cops just told us to move further away. They are taking it seriously.”
10:43 AM: According to KRON4, the suspicious package in question was a piece of luggage discovered in front of an area Jamba Juice. A police officer they spoke to said that usually, this wouldn’t be a big deal, but the luggage in question was discovered by a federal agent, who opted to call it in in an effort to be “better safe than sorry.”
People who work in area buildings, they say, are being asked to stay indoors to “let the bomb squad do its job.” They don’t know how liong that will take, nor was SFPD able to say how long streets in the area would remain closed.
11:40 AM: The bomb squad’s opened the luggage, which contained non-explosive clothes, reports ABC7’s via 11:30 news broadcast on KOFY. They report that Market Street will reopen at any moment, and that the bomb squad is currently leaving the scene.
