carshare.jpgIn the traditional San Franciscan spirit of environmentalism, Mayor Gavin Newsom announced yesterday that the city will be teaming up with City CarShare, a SF-based nonprofit car sharing organization, to provide vehicles for city officials when they need them.

In a press release from the Mayor’s Office of Communications, Newsom is quoted as saying, “This new partnership is part of our ongoing effort to reduce the size of the city fleet, cut costs and reduce carbon emissions.”

City employees will be able to reserve a car from the City CarShare fleet when they need it for short, work-related trips; however they will still be strongly encouraged to walk, bike or use public transportation whenever possible.

Using City CarShare allows San Francisco to cut costs as well as carbon emissions by not having to purchase new vehicles for the city’s fleet and through reductions in costs of maintenance and insurance.

With these increased efforts to be environmentally conscious behind the wheel, maybe Kamala Harris could take a hint and ditch her private town car? Or the Mayor his Tahoe?
