Happy Spring from the Richmond!
Last night, our own Supervisor Eric Mar was on hand at an event hosted by the League of Young Voters. Responding to questions from the crowd, Mar updated us on the Alexandria Theater, a possible skate park in Golden Gate Park, and his stance on the new soccer fields at Beach Chalet. He really let it rip with his condemnation of the recent city worker layoffs, calling the tactic “racist and sexist”.
The Balboa Theater is hosting “Creature Features” tonight, inspired by the KTVU show from the 1970s that featured horror movies. They’ll screen the film “Horror Express” and show you vintage footage from the the show, including classic 70’s commercials. The Balboa has also added two more shows for “Remembering Playland”, the new documentary about the iconic amusement park. Saturday and Sunday at noon, advance tickets here.
In business news this week, we’ve got stories on the sisters that run 37-year old Satin Moon Fabrics on Clement Street, and Covet, a handmade jewelry boutique just around the corner on Arguello. Further down Clement is Green Apple Books, which is offering 30% off your purchase through the end of March.
Richmond ice cream lovers were momentarily distressed with the news that Joe’s Ice Cream on 18th and Geary will be moving. But not far – just a half block down Geary. Judging by the comments that wax nostalgic, I don’t think they’ll lose any customers with the move. Nearby on Geary, the new restaurant Morph is getting ready to open. Grub Street SF has pics of the slick interior of this Japanese-Thai fusion bistro, opening soon.
I’ll close with a shout out to Lorri Ungaretti, a Richmond District historian who is being honored by the city as part of Women’s History Month. Her book on the Richmond’s history was an invaluable tool when getting my blog going. So thanks, Lorri and congratulations!
