sfpd_squad.jpgThree people were injured in San Francisco Tuesday night when two suspects allegedly sped away from a traffic stop and crashed, police said.

At around 11:15 p.m., a patrol officer pulled over a vehicle with an alleged mechanical failure in the city's South of Market district, San Francisco police Officer Samson Chan said.

The driver of the vehicle, with one passenger, pulled over at first, and then sped off, Chan said. The patrol officer did not initiate a pursuit.

The two suspects drove through three red lights until Fifth and Bryant streets, where the suspect vehicle crashed broadside into another vehicle in the intersection.

The two suspects were taken to a hospital with injuries that were not expected to be life threatening. They are currently in custody, and investigators have not determined why they avoided the initial traffic stop.

The driver of the victim vehicle was also hospitalized with a non-life threatening injury.
The crash remains under investigation.
