Seven people were injured in a possible alcohol-related collision between a van and a San Francisco Municipal Railway light-rail vehicle this evening in the city’s Bayview District, a police spokesman said.
The crash happened at about 7:45 p.m. on Third Street near Underwood Avenue. Police Officer Samson Chan said it appears the van was heading south on Third Street and was struck after it made an illegal left turn in front of a KT Ingleside/Third Street-line train.
Four people in the van and three people on the train were injured, Chan said.
Muni spokesman Murray Bond said they were all taken to local hospitals for treatment and none of the injuries is considered life-threatening.
Chan said an open container was found inside the van and police are investigating whether the driver was drunk at the time of the collision.
“Right now a DUI investigation is taking place,” Chan said. “We are still early in the preliminary stages of the investigation.”
Buses were shuttling affected Muni customers but Bond said train service was expected to resume through the area by 9 p.m.
San Francisco police are investigating the cause of the crash.
Bond said police are also investigating a separate accident involving a KT Ingleside/Third Street-line train at Capitol and Ocean avenues.
He said two pedestrians were sideswiped by a train at about 4 p.m. One of the pedestrians was treated at the scene and the other was taken to San Francisco General Hospital to be treated for injuries that are not life-threatening.
