San Francisco firefighters and the U.S. Coast Guard were called to a spot near the Cliff House restaurant in San Francisco late this morning to rescue a surfer who was stranded on the rocks.

The fire department was notified at 11:39 a.m. that the surfer was stranded in the general area of Point Lobos Avenue and Merrie Way.

“One of the surfers was pulled out a bit and the surfer made it to the rocks and was awaiting assistance,” fire spokeswoman Lt. Mindy Talmadge said.

A Coast Guard helicopter and a small boat had been sent to the area, Talmadge said.

A Coast Guard spokesman said at about 12:15 p.m. that the surfer had just been rescued via helicopter and transferred to the shore.
