More than 100 demonstrators were detained this evening at a rally in downtown San Francisco held by hotel workers who have been without new contracts since August, police and rally organizers said.
Hotel workers and community supporters gathered at about 4:30 p.m. on Market Street between Third and Fourth Streets, calling for a boycott of the Hilton San Francisco before marching to that hotel.
San Francisco police spokesman Boaz Mariles said between 100 and 125 demonstrators were cited and released for various violations, including obstructing the roadway.
Unite Here Local 2 President Mike Casey estimated 1,300 demonstrators took part in today’s action. Unite Here Local 2, which represents thousands of room cleaners, cooks, food servers, bellmen, bartenders and dishwashers, is negotiating separately with the management of 61 San Francisco hotels.
Workers have previously called for boycotts of the Grand Hyatt, the Palace Hotel, the Westin St. Francis and the W Hotel.
