All southbound lanes of Interstate Highway 280 are open through San Francisco after a two-vehicle collision and a fatal pedestrian crash closed portions of the roadway for more than two hours late Thursday night and this morning, a California Highway Patrol officer said.
A sport utility vehicle and an Acura crashed on southbound Highway 280 near San Jose Avenue at about 12:05 a.m., CHP Officer Peter Van Eckhardt said. A Sig-alert issued at 12:20 a.m. was canceled just before 1 a.m. when the crash was cleared from the center lanes.
Traffic had been slow through the area due to a prior collision, when at about 10:15 p.m., a pedestrian was apparently struck by several vehicles and killed in the southbound lanes of the highway near Ocean Avenue.
All southbound lanes of the highway had been closed while emergency crews cleared the roadway of debris left by the fatal pedestrian crash, Van Eckhardt said, which was completed by about 12:10 a.m.
The congested roadway might have contributed to the second crash, Van Eckhardt said, which caused minor injuries.
The CHP is investigating both incidents.
